Each recipe contains background information, a complete list of ingredients and detailed instructions. The book assumes that the reader has at least a little cooking experience and knows the basics of sautéing, braising, roasting, etc.
Most recipes include suggestions for variations on the theme. The reader is challenged (if he or she wants to be challenged) to exercise his or her personal creative juices and to modify the recipe to make it his or her very own creation.
Information is provided on the subject of equipment and ingredient sources. In this context, an emphasis is placed on where to get the best deals. In addition, recommendations for what the reader should have in the pantry are provided.
One of the criteria for inclusion of a recipe is that it had to be good for cooking both a family meal and for entertaining a crowd. Each recipe tells how many servings it is designed to provide so that the ingredient amounts can be increased or decreased in accordance with the number of people to be fed.

Easy Gourmet Recipes for the Frugal Cook Mikey Likes It! edition by Michael Burwen Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
Author Michael P. Burwen has written a decent cookbook when it comes to recipes but his book does contain a couple minor inaccuracies.
1. The author states Mastercook is no longer available and he now uses Living Cookbook. Mastercook is alive and well and can be purchased online at the website of the same name. You can find Mastercook 14 at the website and it is being sold for $25 or less, if I remember right.
2. He claims prime is $80 a year. He's close but not close enough as Prime membership is $79 a year the last time I checked.
As to the recipes I would not call all the recipes frugal but I would call them gourmet. Most frugal cooks are not able to afford to purchase and cook luxury ingredients such as
Clams
Shrimp
Lamb
Gruyere
Prosciutto
Parmigiano
Swordfish
You will find the above ingredients used in his frugal cookbook.
You will find some ingredients or recipes that are frugal. They are
German Apple Pancake
Cupcake Blintzes
Balsamic-Braised Pot Roast
Chickens en Papillote (uses Vermouth but if you need to be terribly frugal you could substitute chicken broth as I've done this in a pinch)
I tried very hard to find some frugal recipes in this book but it was difficult. Of course my idea of frugality differs from his. When I am really being frugal I do make some truly frugal recipes such as
Quiche
Fried Chicken
Roast Chicken
Tuna Casserole
Corn Dog Muffins
I did not find any of the above recipes in his cookbook.
I do believe the author meant well, and I guess it all depends on how you define frugal cooking. For most frugal cooks, I suspect, you will not find them cooking with any of the ingredients I listed as luxury ingredients earlier in this review.
Recommend with caveats given.

This is more than a cookbook! Mr. Burwen has integrated many helpful shopping tips into his recipe descriptions and I have found them useful already. His history of each recipe is quite interesting and makes for delightful reading. It is fun to to try to make these dishes and many bring back memories of childhood meals. Bravo Michael!
This is a great collection of mouth-water recipes. Mr. Burwen covers a variety of foods from breakfast through dinner deserts. I particularly like the easy written format that he chose. While I've only tried a few out of this book (Italian Mac and Cheese is current fave), I already know that I'll find something for every occasion or meal! Congrats on a job well done!
Great writing (but I'm biased, as I know the author.)
Have tried several of the recipes and they are easy and good. Would recommend this to anyone who likes good food without a lot of fuss.
OK, I know Mike Burwen. But I write this review because I wish to, not because of friendship. Mike is a smart guy, and has this interesting hobby. Fortunately for us, he's willing to share his versatile and comprehensive array of favorite recipes. My wife and I are eager to start using this as our go-to cookbook. And yes, you can print out your d recipes from your Mac, protecting the Mac from the adversities of the kitchen environment. At the very least, check out Mike's version of beef stroganoff. Maybe even comparing it to Julia's famous, but labor-intensive, recipe of Julie and Julia fame. Hardly anyone needs another cookbook, but this is a great addition anyway !
Like most home cooks, I love making delicious, flavorful food for family and friends. Elbows on the table, napkins on laps and the dog begging for morsels. In addition, I revere an author that has the ability to put their cooking experience in writing the clear, thoughtful, organized way Michael Burwen has.
Being a 50 year collector of cookbooks with a library of over 300 of 'em, along with every single issue of Saveur Magazine from it's inception, I can say that this aptly titled book will be a top favorite of mine for time honored, go-to, easy-to-make recipes.
We've savored many of these internationally inspired recipes, look forward to enjoying them all and think you will as well. All of the ingredients are easily available for home cooks who love wonderful food! I especially like the insightful authors notes of experience. Therefore, I highly recommend this book!
The book grabs you from the very first page of the introduction - you can actually see the wink in the author's eye when he explains the do's and don'ts and the ingredients and utensils.
The author's selection of two hundred and a bit preferred recipes (out of a thousand or so he has tried) is varied and well composed if you want to prepare a balanced delicious meal.
The recipes are easy to follow, not difficult to prepare and the end results ( those that we cooked so far) are very nice (this is your British understatement at its best) and while they might not be entirely frugal to everybody's pocket most are certainly quite gourmet.
We are nowhere near trying the 260 or so recipes but it won't be long before we will have to ask Michael Burwen for a sequel.
